How do I Register the Domain Name?
There are also a few high
profile registrars with great branding programs thathave some small
print you will want to know about.Register.com and NetworkSolutions.com
charge premium pricing, but have beenaround forever and are very
trustworthy.
Register.com is currently charging $40per year. Network
Solutions is $35 per year, but registration is free if you hostwith them
– their hosting packages start at $120 annually.Moniker.com charges
around $8 if you register one name at a time, but if youregister more
than one name at once and simply give them a call, they are very flexible
and will usually cut you a deal for buying in multiples.
They have a
veryclean reputation in the marketplace and are very customer
friendly .GoDaddy.com charges only $9.99 per year, BUT, there are enough
negative comments building up out there to give me pause. If there are
any spamcomplaints about your domain name, and you cannot substantiate
your innocence to GoDaddy’s satisfaction, you may have to pay a $199 per
infractionfee if you want them to continue to be your domain registrar
for that domainname or a $75 fee to close the spam complaint case and
transfer your domainname to another registrar.Either way, you are going
to pay a fine or they will take away your domain name.
If you Google
“GoDaddy suspend domain account”, you will find 10+pages of tales of
domain owners accounts taken from them by GoDaddy. In thepast, hosting
companies have gotten involved with spamming complaints, butnot
registrars, but it seems to be a mission for GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons. In a
2004 interview Bob Parson’s said, "Everything starts with the domain
name.We are probably the most proactive registrar when it comes to
suppressingspam.
If someone reports to us a domain that's spamming, we
look into it and, ifit's true, boom, that thing is redirected and done.
You'd better get a new domainname. But we're the exception. If all the
registrars would work together, spamprobably would be a fraction of what
it is."
No one likes spam, but you don’t want someone holding your domain namehostage just because someone that asks you to send them email suddenlydecides he doesn’t like you and hits a built in spam complaint button. Some domain registrars are as cheap as $1.99 per name, but you don’t want afly-by-night operation that will take your money and run or be out of business ina few months.***NEWS ALERT***As of this writing, there are numerous complaints on ICANN’s public forums aswell as the web in general about domain transfer issues with both GoDaddy and NetworkSolutions. As a caution, when you register a domain for the first time, you may not transferit away from the original registrar within the first 60 days of its existence. Inplain language, if you buy and register it with GoDaddy, then sell it within theinitial 60 days, all you can do is transfer the owner information on WhoIs. Itcannot be moved from GoDaddy to Network Solutions or to any other registrar.

The issues I have been hearing about are with owners trying to
transfer domainsout of GoDaddy (most of the complaints are about them)
or NetworkSolutionsand have the transfer denied although it is past 60
days after registration. Some registrars (no names mentioned) will go to
great strides to prevent youfrom taking your domain elsewhere.
After
all, it’s money in the bank if they cankeep you there. If your WhoIs
information needs updated, for instance, if your phone numberchanges and
you update your domain contact information then some registrarswill
“restart” your 60 day transfer block.
Moniker.com, in my opinion, is the best domain registrar available. They are oneof the few companies that realizes that your domains are valuable assets.Moniker is so trusted among the domain industry that many of the largestdomain brokers will only use Moniker to transfer domains. Therefore if you plan to buy and sell domains, you will need to have a Monikeraccount.
